Wild Orangutan

Discover the Soul of Sumatra

Embark on a journey into one of the world's last great wildernesses. Sumatra is an island of dramatic contrasts, where smoldering volcanoes rise above ancient rainforests and rare wildlife roams free. Our adventures take you deep into the heart of the UNESCO-listed Gunung Leuser National Park, a sanctuary for the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan. Discover the vibrant cultures, breathtaking landscapes, and unforgettable wildlife encounters that make Sumatra a truly once-in-a-lifetime destination.

About Sumatra

The sixth-largest island in the world, Sumatra is a land of raw, untamed beauty. It's a mosaic of dense tropical rainforests, active volcanoes, and stunning volcanic lakes like Lake Toba.

Home to an incredible array of biodiversity, it offers some of the most authentic and adventurous travel experiences in Southeast Asia. The island's spine is the Barisan Mountains, a volcanic range that has created fertile highlands perfect for growing world-class coffee. Its culture is as diverse as its landscape, with unique ethnic groups like the Batak, Minangkabau, and Acehnese people, each with their own rich traditions, architecture, and cuisine.

About Bukit Lawang

Nestled on the edge of the Gunung Leuser National Park, the small village of Bukit Lawang is the primary gateway for orangutan trekking. Life here moves at a relaxed pace along the Bohorok River.

It serves as the perfect base camp for jungle adventures, offering a unique blend of local culture and incredible nature at your doorstep. Originally established as an orangutan rehabilitation center, the village has grown into a hub for eco-tourism, but it still retains its rustic charm. Here, you can fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle and wake up to the sight of monkeys playing in the trees.

About the Orangutan

Meaning "Person of the Forest," the Sumatran Orangutan is a critically endangered great ape found only on this island. Known for their intelligence and gentle nature, seeing them in their natural habitat is a profound experience.

They are highly arboreal, spending most of their lives in the treetops, feasting on fruits like durian and figs. The Gunung Leuser National Park is one of their last remaining strongholds. Our tours are focused on ethical observation, which means keeping a safe distance and never feeding them, ensuring their long-term survival and the preservation of their wild behavior.

Frequently Asked Questions

Indonesia's visa policy can change, so it's crucial to check the latest information before you travel. Most nationalities can apply for a Visa on Arrival (VoA) at the airport, which is valid for 30 days and can be extended once. You can also apply for an e-VoA online before arrival for a smoother process. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, please visit the official Indonesian Immigration website or contact the Indonesian embassy in your country.

The best time to visit Bukit Lawang is during the dry season, which typically runs from April to September. During this period, the weather is clearer and the trekking paths are less slippery. However, as a tropical rainforest, short showers can occur at any time of the year. The peak tourist season is usually in July and August. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, consider visiting during the shoulder months like March, April, or October.

As we are not medical professionals, it's essential to consult your doctor or a travel clinic 4-6 weeks before your departure. Commonly recommended vaccinations for this region include Hepatitis A & B, Tetanus, and Typhoid. Malaria is present in some parts of Sumatra, so discuss the need for anti-malarial medication with your doctor. Additionally, dengue fever is a risk, so always carry a strong insect repellent (with DEET) and wear long clothing in the evenings.

  • Clothing: Lightweight long-sleeved shirts/t-shirts, long trekking pants (not jeans), a change of clothes for camp, swimwear, trekking socks.
  • Footwear: Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip. Sandals or camp shoes for relaxing in the evening.
  • Health & Safety: Insect repellent (essential), sunscreen, personal first-aid kit (including personal medication, plasters, antiseptic), hand sanitizer.
  • Miscellaneous: Small backpack (daypack) for trekking, a dry bag to protect electronics, a torch or headlamp, a power bank, a camera, a reusable water bottle, and some cash (Indonesian Rupiah) for tips or small purchases.

Your safety and the well-being of the wildlife are our top priorities. Our licensed guides are trained to understand animal behavior and will ensure you remain safe. The golden rule is: Never feed or touch wildlife, especially orangutans. Maintain a minimum distance of 10 meters. This is to protect them from human diseases and to preserve their natural behaviors. Always listen to your guide's instructions; they know when it's safe to approach and when to back away.

We offer a range of trekking options suitable for all fitness levels. The terrain can be challenging with steep inclines, descents, and high humidity. Our Half-Day 'Taster' Trek is suitable for beginners and families. Longer treks, such as the 3-day expedition, require a good level of fitness. Let us know your fitness level and experience, and we will recommend the perfect adventure for you.
